Alps site approval to create 500 new jobs

‘SHOCK AS BORD PLEANALA GIVES GREEN LIGHT’

Arklow could be dragged from recession with the news that the long awaited Alps site on Upper Main Street has been granted development approval.

Developer Graham Quinn received the news from An Bord Pleanála yesterday morning and told the Wicklow People that he is ‘delighted and shocked’.

For the past two years the file has been under consideration by the board and has been amended on several occasions following objections from various parties.
The biggest change that is to be made as a result of conditions is for a section of the building to be reduced from three to two storeys.

The project was estimated pre-recession to cost in the region of €180m and is expected to create up to 500 new jobs including during construction stages.

‘It is fantastic news, now I can start talking to anchor tenants and negotiating with them, all of which was put on hold until we had a decision.  The first stages will be to start marketing the project and to appoint an auctioneer,’ said Mr. Quinn.

The Dublin-based developer said that he is keen to bring the project to fruition and that Arklow is a great town which will undoubtedly benefit from this economic boost.
‘Arklow is a great town with a great population and this will create a lot of employment.  We want to get good operators for the hotel and retail units which will provide products that Arklow needs,’ he added.

The site on which the old Ormonde Cinema building stands will be transformed for the construction of a 93 bedroom hotel, 74 residential units, medical centre, crèche, 35 retail units and 14 office units and a multi storey car park facility.

‘A Journey through Wicklow highlights some of the best attractions that our beautiful county has to offer.  This type of promotion is an excellent resource by which to promote the county both in Ireland and abroad.  Not only has the film aired on City Channel and Channel South for a number of months this year, it is also available to watch on our website, www.visitwicklow.ie and it can also be viewed on YouTube.  We featured the DVD in our recent pan-European e-zine campaign, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, and was sent to over 1 million ‘friends of Ireland’ email addresses throughout Europe.’

Update finally received on Alps Project

The long running saga over the development of the Alps site on Upper Main Street could be drawing to a close after the developer was contacted by An Bord Pleanála after an almost two year wait.

Speaking to the Wicklow People this week, Graham Quinn outlined that he received an update on project submissions last week.

‘A few more issues were raised in relation to drainage and water and we are agreeable to dealing with them. Hopefully a decision will be reached sooner rather than later. The matter has been with the board for almost two years now so hopefully we will have some news as soon as possible, he said.

Pre-recession, the retail and commercial development, which could create up to 500 new jobs, was estimated at a cost of €180m.

Plans include provisions for a hotel, multi-storey car park, public courtyard, retail and office units.

Mr. Quinn who previously confirmed that a popular hotel chain was interested in signing up for Arklow says that the extraordinary delay regarding approval has left him unable to pitch the development to potential tenants.

‘My hands are tied, I have nothing concrete to sell them until the board makes its decision. I cannot do a deal until I am certain the project can go ahead. I am optimistic it will and I am delighted to bring it to fruition.’

RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN THE SPIRIT OF SEABREEZE FESTIVAL

Despite its best efforts, the rain failed to dampen spirits for the carnival atmosphere created by the Seabreeze Festival in Arklow last weekend. It was a weekend of sheer fun and magic as adults and children alike took part in many of the events on the street.

Friday night kicked off in great fashion as the streets were closed to traffic and the Gladiators and Wipe Out Competition took centre stage on the street, providing great free fun for all festival goers. The mini car push on Lower Main Street, provided great entertainment as did the Tradewinds Burger Eating competition, which saw a new winner emerge putting away a massive eight burgers.

On street entertainment was provided by Big Jewels on the lower main street and the carnival and amusements kept people entertained all weekend long.

On Saturday a large number of people took to the streets for the annual Busking Competition, with various styles and acts taking part. One of the highlights of Saturday was the Teddy Bears Picnic, which took place in the Park on Main Street.

Music on Saturday night was provided by the world famous Wolfe Tones who drew a huge crowd to the town as did Roy Taylor singing Michael Bubble. The world famous The Elders who travelled from the United States to be part of the event, provided top class entertainment and the crowds shouted for more such was their impact.

Sunday’s highlights included Irish dancing competitions, Amateur Generation, the Dainty Bakery Baby Show, the Garda mounted unit, dancing from Martina Lynch and her dance academy, children’s kit care race, an ice cream eating competition and entertainment by the Arklow Pipe Band. Another big hit was the Pig Derby which was the highlight of the afternoon.

Wrapping up the Seabreeze Festival for 2010 was the firework display on the riverbank, which was truly amazing, and ensured people went home happy, tired and happy. Festival Chairperson, Els Penston, thanked all the people of Arklow for their sponsorship and support and for turning out in such large numbers. "It is truly gratifying to see all our hard work pay off as we strive to provide top class entertainment, all free, and fun for the people of Arklow".

Co. Wicklow Macra na Feirme beat off stiff competition to win the opportunity to host the event which will see delegates from all over the country attend.

Special guest Mick O’Dwyer was present to officially launch the conference which is widely regarded as the most prestigious event in the Macra calendar.

The three-day event is a festival which will start on the Friday and run for three days to include a banquet dinner and the conference itself to appeal to those with farming interests and ordinary members of the public.

FURTHER DETAILS WILL FOLLOW NEARER TO THE TIME.

Chamber of Commerce enjoys a feast of ideas at social evening

Last Tuesday evening June 8th saw a great turn out for the Arklow Chamber member’s social evening in the Park Restaurant, Castle Park, Arklow. Co. Wicklow

The aim of the evening was to celebrate local business while asking our members what more the Chamber could do for them. A discussion was opened up to the floor and many interesting suggestions were made.

Some of the suggestions raised by members were:

• Establish a weekly column with the paper to give “good news” about Arklow
• Hold an Arklow specific Business Expo
• Have information about the ABN (Arklow Business Network)in the Bank available for new   business
• Provide advice / support for new start up companies
• Target specific sectors and groups for events and ABN
• Offer a discount system within the ABN attendees
• Hold a street event in August
• Document and publish success stories of referral from the ABN
• Advertise and market ABN more

These are just some of the ideas to come from Members and the Chamber is now looking at ways to implement these and come up with a strategic plan for the way forward.

We would encourage all members to send in their good news stories to the Chamber on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , news such as new premises or businesses opening, special offers, events happening etc.  We need to highlight Arklow in a positive way and concrete on the good business we are doing rather than the small number of negative stories that emerge.

It is important not only for ourselves in business, but also the community as a whole to feel good about the place they live in – we need to nurture this positive image of Arklow and get together as a business community to promote the good work we are continuously doing on a day to day basis in all our businesses.

We would also encourage every business owner in Arklow to come along to the Arklow Business Network which will be resuming very shortly in the coming weeks.
